Indian courier rates are not a flat “per kg” everywhere. Lane (origin → destination zone), service product, billable weight, and payment mode all move the quote. Surface estimates help sellers and shoppers sanity-check cost before booking — final invoices still come from the courier or aggregator.
What is volumetric weight?
Light-but-bulky cartons take warehouse and vehicle space. Couriers convert box size into a weight equivalent — commonly (L × B × H cm) ÷ 5000 for domestic e-commerce. You pay the higher of actual scale weight and volumetric weight. That single rule is why oversized packaging quietly inflates freight.
COD charges explained
COD (cash on delivery) adds collection risk and cash-handling cost. Couriers typically add a fee on top of freight — often a percentage of the COD amount with a minimum. Prepaid removes that line item, which is why many sellers nudge customers toward UPI/card checkout.
GST on shipping
Freight and COD fees on courier invoices usually attract GST under the courier’s GSTIN and place-of-supply rules. Online calculators give freight ballparks; use the tax breakup on the booking invoice or credit note for accounting. If you are a registered business, claim ITC only as allowed under current GST law with a valid tax invoice.
